It’s amazing to see how fast technology is advancing and how people who keep up with it have access to many devices created to improve their lifestyles. One of my dreams is to get rid of all wires in my home and replace them with wireless connectivity between devices.
Watching TV at night in the bedroom when someone else is there trying to sleep is a common practice in many homes. Using headphones is a solution but there are at least two issues that I didn’t manage to fix until a few weeks ago – you need headphones designed for the TV, with a very long wire that will get tangled in your bed, plus that you won’t be able to move too much with them over your ears, and secondly, wireless headphones mostly come from famous brands and are expensive.
As I was mentioning, a few weeks ago I was able to get my hands on a pair of wireless headphones after MyTrendyPhone.co.uk sent us a sample for review. Not only I discovered how useful these are, but you can buy them for an affordable price.
Known as the 5-in-1 Wireless Headphones, they allow you to do the following:
• Watch TV wirelessly, having freedom of movement within 30 meters. This also means you can run to the bathroom during your favorite TV show or take a quick snack during commercial breaks, while continuing to hear what’s on TV, so you don’t miss anything and come back when the show is resumed.
• Listen to music and other audio from your smartphone or other sound-enabled device, while moving freely around your home.
• Listen to FM radio stations using the built-in function of the wireless headphones.
• Chat with friends and family over your favorite messaging application, having no cable between the headphones and the computer, thanks to the built-in microphone.
• Hear what’s happening in your baby’s room while cooking something in the kitchen. For this you need to place the emitter part in the room and keep the wireless headphones over your ears.
• Optionally, you can connect the headphones with the included cable to the audio source and use them as wired headphones. In addition, the emitter part also works based on DC 4.5V when you don’t want to use batteries.
In the box
The headphones come packed with the transmitter, a 3.5mm to 3.5 mm audio cable, a 3.5mm to two female RCA adapter cable (mine was lost so the adapter in the photos is a new one), and the user manual.
I also want to tell you a few things about the design of this wireless headphones set. The headphones have a small form factor and look great on any head. They are adjustable for different head sizes and comfortable to wear. On the other hand, the emitter is the part that enables the wireless connection between the TV and headphones, while it doubles as a stand for them. It has a glossy part, like the headphones, but the rest is matte black. I have to be sincere and say that they seem a bit fragile, so I advise you to handle them with care.
How to use the wireless headphones
■ with the TV or other sound-enabled device
This is the easiest part. You need two AAA batteries for the emitter and two for the headphones. I have Duracell and they didn’t drain out yet. Once the batteries are in, you need to turn both devices on, then connect the 3.5mm audio cable jack of the emitter/stand to the TV’s headphones port (where you see the headphones symbol). Slide the button on the back of the emitter to the “Wireless Headphone” or top position to turn it on, while on the headphones you need to slide the wheel to the On position and then press Reset.
If you want to use the headphones with your smartphone or other sound-enabled device, you need to connect the 3.5mm end of the emitter’s cable to the 3.5mm port of your device directly or through a cable adapter.
■ for chat
To make yourself heard on the other end and hear your friend in the headphones while moving around the computer, you need to login to your messaging application and then connect the 3.5mm cable of the emitter to the audio out of the computer (headphone symbol) and make the link between the MIC port of the emitter and the Mic port of the computer with the included cable with yellow 3.5mm ends.
■ for FM radio
This function requires only using the headphones. On these you have the Scan button which you can press to start scanning radio stations automatically. Actually you might not have to press it because I can hear the radio after turning the headphones On.
■ for monitoring purposes
When you want to know what’s happening in a room, while you’re doing something in another, you have to keep the emitter in the original room with the Mic function active. You will be able to hear everything through the headphones, within the 30-meter supported range, even through walls.
Although the overall design is modern and compact, the plastic material for the casing doesn’t seem very durable. It makes it look fragile. The button on the back of the emitter can’t be accurately slid through the headphones’ functions, so I have to slide it a few times until reaching my desired position. I still didn’t understand the use of the red jack of the emitter’s cable. I didn’t need it to enable all the headphones’ functions.
What I like
The 5-in-1 wireless headphones support several useful functions and my favorites are the wireless TV connectivity and the FM radio integrated in the headphones. The built-in Mic is also great because I didn’t manage to get a desk microphone yet.
