Today we’re reviewing a powerful speaker system designed and optimized for portability while enhancing the sound coming from your portable media player. The X-mini MAX II Capsule Speakers were created by XMI, the Singapore-based company that won two prestigious awards at the Red Dot Design Awards in Germany and Infocomm Singapore Awards for designing the X-mini capsule speakers. XMI is the same company that created the X-mini II Capsule Speaker which we had the chance to review last year.
The difference between the two X-minis is that X-mini II is one speaker, while X-mini MAX II is a stereo set of two speakers that travel as a single gadget.
In the box:
The speakers come in a box similar to the one of the X-mini II, which contains the speakers, the 3-in-1 connectivity cable, a soft black travel pouch, and the small user guide. There is also the small flayer, included probably in all X-mini boxes, about the Children International organization that helps children from all over the world. XMI is one of the contributors.
While using the XMI X-mini MAX II Capsule Speakers I liked that they come as a single unit, in the shape of a big egg if you like, that can be held in one hand easily or carried inside a purse or pocket, without occupying much space inside or adding too much extra weight.
The exterior is made from a soft, rubberized material, while the 65.8 × 53.4-mm unit weighs only 178 grams.
The two speakers are kept stuck to each other by a magnetic system, but you have to make sure ou you’re holding both in your hand because sudden moves could make them break apart.
The cable I was telling you about has two mini USB ends for each speaker, the 3.5-mm jack for the audio source, a standard USB end for the computer and the volume control. Having the modular Buddy-Jack design enables them to connect to other X-minis, creating an endless self-powered daisy-chain for greater sound.
Speaker: MAGNETISM PREVENT D40*H20mm (4Ω)/2W
Loudspeaker Output: 2.5W×2
Frequency Response: 200Hz~18K Hz
Battery Voltage/Capacity: 400mAh
Battery Charging Voltage: 5V/+0.5V
When you’re in the mood for listening to the music from your cell phone, laptop or portable media player, you have to set the speakers apart, place them on a desk, open them by twisting the tops to extend the speakers and open the resonance chamber, turn both on with the on/off button and connect them to the sound source with the included cable. The patented accordion-like Bass Xpansion System mimics the resonance of a subwoofer.
You can place the speakers in separate places within the 1.5-m range permitted by the cable that links them, or use them individually.
They charge in about 2.5 hours via USB while connected to the laptop and can operate for up to 12 hours continuously from a full charge. The LED light indicators are blue when powered on and red while charging.
I can say I like the capsule speakers pretty much, especially for the powerful sound they enable, for both cell phones and laptops with low-quality built-in speakers. You can feel that the sound is not as powerful as when coming from some big and expensive speakers, but it’s clear and allows you to share songs of any music genre with your friends while traveling.
The MXI X-mini MAX II Capsule Speakers are available at the online shop on the developer’s web site for $49.90.
Tip: You have two possibilities to get a 25% discount when you purchase speakers from the official shop. One is to paste the special sticker from XMI with “I love X-mini Sound Beyond Size” on yourself and upload a picture with you, or record a video and send it to XMI at Xemail@example.com. The second is to take a photo or record a video with you and your X-mini speaker, instead of the sticker, and upload/send it to Facebook/XMI.
(We want to thank XMI and Darelle for sending the X-mini MAX II Capsule Speakers for review!)
One last thing: Stay tuned and subscribe to our newsletter because soon we’ll be giving away an X-mini II capsule speaker.
