You might think that spending a few hundred pounds on a decent set of amplifiers is splashing out. However, when money’s no object, prices start to rise significantly for top of the range amps. Some of the best amplifiers in the world are distinguished by their excellent range, equalisation, size, reduced distortion, and ability to reproduce the feel of a live performance, as well as providing clear sound for a large auditorium. With prices ranging from just under $500,000 up to a staggering $2 million, the following list represents the most expensive consumer audio amplifiers currently available:
5 – Spharon Excalibur
Designed by Acapella Audio Arts, these $380,000 plus speakers boast identical columns, and eight thirty inch subwoofers, with the combined range of the amp reaching twelve square metres. The German amps have a weight of 620kg, and a spectrum that falls between 5 kHZ to 50 kHZ. Exceptional drive is created by the 243cm speakers, with no analogue and full stereo sound. When installed, the Spharon Excalibur is perhaps the nearest approximation of a live concert, at least compared to some of the more expensive amps available on the market.
4 – MBX 10.9s46
A California Audio Technologies product, the MBX 10.9s46 weights in at a hefty $560,000, and are stylishly shaped into giant guitars that stand 24 feet tall, with each amp stand weighing a ton. The speakers are also coloured in bright reds, and are specifically designed to provide outstanding sound levels for large venues, and for homes. A set are currently in operation at the Caesar’s Palace Casino in Las Vegas.
3 – Infinite Wisdom Grande Loudspeaker
At $700,000, these Wisdom loudspeakers are 2 tons and 23 feet tall, and consist of four units. Designed for consumer use in large environments, the speakers are able to produce extremely high sounds that push past the 120 decibel mark. Their technology is primarily based in the complexity of their transducers, which offer increased surface area and reduced distortion. The Infinite speakers also have a 3 inch voice coil, and 24 drivers per pair of speakers.
2 – Grand Enigma
The most expensive speakers in the world for some time until the ULTIMATE came along, the Grand Enigma costs $1 million, and is designed by the Belgian company Kharma. The speakers themselves have been shrouded in secrecy by the Belgian group, with the rumour being that there is only one in existence, and that it’s came in a basement. Kharma also produce other speakers and high-end audio, with the Grand Enigma understood to produce exceptionally high decibel ranges.
1 – ULTIMATE
$1 million will get you just one of these speakers, which should really come as a pair if you want to get your money’s worth. Designed by Transmission Audi, the speakers can generate 500 watts, and include 10 fifteen inch subwoofers, as well as 24 eight inch unit channels, and 68 ribbons. 12 individual speakers help to make the Swedish speakers capable of mind blowing sound and exceptional mid range performance.
