Any company or public sector organization relies on phone systems, for communication between staff and customers. However, most people aren’t aware of the environmental impact of a simple phone system – and making your phones eco-friendly can save you energy and money.
Being ecologically aware and reducing your carbon footprint is important for any business, as customers are becoming increasingly aware of environmentally friendly business practices, and many will choose products based on their carbon footprint.
If you supply your staff with mobile phones, you may not be aware that just one minute of usage produces an estimated 57g of CO2. If the phone is used for an hour a day over a year (which, let’s face it, is not unlikely), this would produce 125 million tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of a one way ticket from London to New York! This calculation is based on call time, so if your staff use smart phones for messaging and internet searches too, the figure will increase.
One way to reduce the carbon footprint of mobile phones is to use desk phones as much as possible: these use approximately one third of the power of a mobile phone. Additionally, if you can replace a few mobiles with desk phones, you’ll probably save a bit of money on contracts too.
Another good way to keep your business eco-friendly is to look for refurbished telephones. These are phones that have been repaired and re-used, and are generally cheaper to buy than brand new phone systems. In terms of your carbon footprint, buying a refurbished phone will cut out the energy that would be used by taking an old phone to a landfill site, and also the energy that would be used to produce a brand new phone. If you opt for refurbished landlines as opposed to mobiles, you’re really onto a winner!
Saving energy is obviously beneficial for the environment and for your image as a responsible business, but it is also a good way to keep running costs down. There are lots of advisory websites (particularly from energy companies and governmental bodies) that can give you advice about other simple ways to cut down on your costs and emissions.
