Largest Opal Matrix Revealed by Stuart Hughes

I’ve heard of opal before, but until today I had no clue of what it actually is and how it looks like. For those of you who still are unsure, opal is an amorphous form of silica, composed of up to 21% water, which has a unique internal structure that makes it diffract light and take multiple colors. It’s being used in jewelry as decorative stones, but the news is that Stuart Hughes and his partners in Australia have just revealed the world’s largest opal matrix that looks amazing, as you can see in the photos.
