Golden Textile Made From Golden Orb Spider Silk
Editor: Sierra Monica B. under: Home » Unique Gift Ideas » Golden Textile Made From Golden Orb Spider Silk
This is the beautiful golden cloth made from spider silk collected from more than one million female golden orb spiders, or Nephila madagascariensis, living in Madagascar. It measures 11 x 4 feet and was created in no less than 4 years using a 100 years old technique.
70 people collected the spiders in the rainy season from the capital of Madagascar and 12 others drew the silk using traditional machines. While each spider produced 80 feet of silk filament, each thread used in weaving required twisting 96 to 960 spider silk filaments together.
The two people that had the idea of creating this cloth are Simon Peers and Nicholas Godley, who spent more than half a million dollars on it.
The textile will be on display at the American Museum of Natural History, in the Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World section, starting November 14.
