Have you noticed fewer business people carrying around briefcases? It’s true, these pieces that were once the symbol of a business person are now going by the wayside. Instead, everything is stored online now. In fact, almost anything you would have once carried in a briefcase is now accessed in a cloud storage.
1. Carry a Personalized Calendar on Your Phone
As a business person, you need to know what appointments you have coming up, where they are, and who they’re with. It’s so much easier to look this all up on your BlackBerry Z10 than it ever was, pulling out a calendar or appointment book. Plus, the calendar on your smartphone can sync to your computer.
This means that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you can ensure that you’re on time and know who you’re meeting with. You can even set reminders on your calendar so you never miss an appointment.
2. Documents on the Go
Another common thing in briefcases were a plethora of documents. Today you can carry around countless documents in your pocket. There are tons of apps that store all sorts of documents in the cloud. Whether you need a presentation that you’ve put together or a scanned document that a coworker created, these can all be saved in programs such as Dropbox, Evernote, and more.
Some apps will even let you send wirelessly to any printer, allowing you to print from anywhere, which is great if you simply need a hardcopy of a document before a meeting.
3. Take Notes and Keep Them Stored
Carrying around a variety of notebooks is a thing of the past. You can take notes, keep them stored, and even organize them into different folders on your device. Then store these notes in the cloud for future use. There are apps that let you do this, plus you can use things like your email, if you simply want to send yourself a message.
Again, you can access these notes from any device, making it a much more reliable way to keep notes; you’ll never have to worry about a lost notebook again.
4. Books for Downtime
Every business person has downtime. If you ride the bus or subway, it’s good to have something to read. Even if you’re waiting on an appointment, having a good book on hand is important. In the past, you had to carry your books around in your briefcase. However, today you can carry around as many books as you want on your mobile devices.
There are multiple e-book apps that allow you to read books for free or books that you’ve paid for. And no matter how many books you carry with you, your device never gets any heavier. The Kindle app stores all of your books in a cloud and allows you to access any them from any Kindle device — it even stores what page you last read!
It’s kind of sad to see the end of briefcases. Today they are still used almost as a status symbol. However, they’re really not necessary for the day-to-day needs of a business person with a cell phone, since everything can be done through the cloud.
